Breaking: Nigerians stranded in the UK arrive in Lagos

Some Nigerians who were stranded in the United Kingdom following COVID-19 lockdown in the country on Friday arrived the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

They arrived aboard a British Airway plane at the airport in the afternoon and are expected to be airlifted to Abuja where they will be quarantined for 14 days.

Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, confirmed their arrival as she said: “The first evacuation from the Uk has landed in Lagos. The passengers will be proceeding to Abuja where they will be on 14-day compulsory isolation.”

The Federal government had earlier disclosed that there were discussions with the British Airways through the British High Commission to evacuate 300 Nigerians from London on Friday, March 8..

Adding that arrangements with Ethiopian Airways to evacuate Nigerians from New York to Abuja are also ongoing as evacuees are expected on Monday, May 11.

The evacuation is as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic which has affected nearly 4 million people globally and caused over 200,000 deaths.

It would be recalled that on Wednesday about 256 Nigerians stranded at the United Arab Emirates arrived Nigeria aboard the Emirate Airlines and were taken into isolation in two hotels in Lagos.
