President Muhammadu Buhari, has written the Senate, requesting the screening and confirmation of Professor Mahmood Yakubu as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for a second and final term in office.
Senate President Ahmad Lawan read Buhari’s letter of request during plenary in Abuja on Tuesday after the lawmakers returned from a one-month recess.
Professor Mahmoud Yakubu on November 9, 2020 handed over to Air Vice-Marshal Ahmed Muazu (retd) to be the acting chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after his 5-year tenure ended.
However, President Buhari wants Yakubu to serve another tenure, a request that is now waiting confirmation from the Senate.
