Officers of the Nigerian army have been accused of killing a first year student of the Imo State University, Divine Nwaneri, on Sunday, April 25.

Nwaneri, a native of Umukam in Obollo community in the Isiala Mbano council of Imo state, was a 100L student of Soil Science and Biotechnology, Faculty of Agriculture.

Nwaneri’s friends and fellow students narrated that she was shot by the soldiers who were keeping guard in front of Government House in Owerri.

It was gathered that the soldiers opened fire on the 24- year-old student while she was riding in a Lexus IS 250 with her friends, on their way back from a pool party on Sunday, around 10pm.

Nwaneri was shot alongside the male driver and were both rushed to the Federal Medical Center, Owerri, where the IMSU undergraduate was later confirmed dead, while the driver survived.

The Student Union Government (SUG) president, Arinze Oguike, while speaking with Punch said that the student body has made a formal request to the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Peter Aka, demanding justice for the slain undergraduate.

The student leader said, “We have made a formal demand to VC that the soldiers who killed our student be identified and arrested. We have also asked that the medical personnel on duty be arrested for professional negligence.

As of the time of filing this report, the vehicle in which the undergraduate was killed was still parked in front of the state Government House.
