The officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Benue state have been accused of abusing their powers after they arrested and detained the CEO of Star Sharwama in Makurdi over N1,600 transaction misunderstanding.
It was gathered that the lady, Mnena Anita who is the CEO of Star Sharwama was arrested and detained for hours on Wednesday, April 6th by EFCC officials in Makurdi.
A Human Rights Activist, Mimi Atedze who spoke with Expressiveinfo stated that a female EFCC official had ordered and paid for an item at Star Sharwama. She was supposed to pay 1500 but made an online transaction of 1600 instead.
Since Star Sharwama was expecting an alert for the payment of N1,500 but did not get it, they kept calling her to send the money and assumed the N1,600 was for another person’s order.
When they finally got the statement from the bank which showed that she was the person who made the payment of N1,600, Star Sharwama called to inform her and apologize for everything but the EFCC official became very angry and vowed to deal with them.
On Wednesday, Anita was arrested with some members of her staff. They were detained at EFCC office in Makurdi. Others were later released, but she was kept in detention and released around 7 pm after she was accused of fraud.
She was asked to report back today, Thursday on allegations of fraud.
They vowed to charge her to court today for fraud, but she has not been charged yet as at 3pm. Instead, they released her and detained her accountant and manager.
Another source family with the incident alleged that Benue Liason officer, ACP Ayodeji Babalola was the one who ordered the arrest. According to him, “Babalola ordered the unlawful arrest of CEO/MD Star Sharwama, Miss Mnena because his girlfriend, Toryila Hambafan complained about a transaction of N1,600.”
