Finally! Over 300 Kankara Schoolboys released, Katsina Govt Confirms

The Government of Katsina state has now confirmed the release of about 340 students who were abducted from the Government Science Secondary School, Kankara.

Earlier, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, announced the news of the release of the students on Twitter. However, there was confusion minutes later after she denied making the announcement, claiming that her account was hacked.

Well, now the Secretary to the Katsina State Government, Mustapha Inuwa, has confirmed the release while speaking with BBC Hausa on Thursday evening.

According to reports, the schoolboys are on their way to Katsina city and are expected to arrive there close to midnight. BBC further reported that President Muhammadu Buhari would receive the schoolboys at the state capital tomorrow.

The students had been abducted by Boko Haram on the night of Friday, December 11. The terror group claimed that it had kidnapped 523 students and multiple accounts say there were at least 520 victims. It is currently not clear what the plans are for the remaining students.

The governor of Zamfara State where the children were held hostage, Bello Matawalle, has also confirmed their release.

“Alhamdulillah for the successful rescue of students kidnapped from Government Science Secondary School Kankara, Katsina State. To God be the Glory,” he tweeted on Thursday.
