5 days after release ex-convict arrested for robbery in Lagos

Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command have re-arrested an ex-convict, Segun Kolawole, for robbery just five days after his release from the Kirikiri Correctional Centre.

SP Adebisi Abimbola, the spokesperson of the command, who disclosed this in a statement on Thursday said Kolawole, 25, allegedly stole an Infinix Note 40 Pro smartphone and N200,000 cash from a trader in Opebi, Ikeja.

He was apprehended around 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the Oshodi Market after RRS operatives noticed he was in possession of a large sum of money and became suspicious.

Upon interrogation, he could not give a satisfactory explanation for the N80,000 found on him or the phone in his possession.

“Subsequent investigation revealed that Kolawole had stolen the cash and mobile phone around 5:00 a.m. from a trader who was asleep near Peka, Opebi. The victim was later traced and confirmed the theft,” the PPRO stated.

Recovered from the suspect were N80,000 cash, an Infinix Note 40 Pro smartphone, newly bought clothes, and shoes.

In a related development, RRS operatives also arrested two suspected pickpockets, Sodiq Isa, 27, and Adekanmbi Ganiu, 21, for attempting to steal mobile phones from commuters at Ojota Bridge and Orile Roundabout, respectively, around 5:00 p.m. on last Friday.

The suspects, according to police, confessed to the crimes during preliminary investigation.

“All three suspects have confessed to their involvement in the offences and will be charged to court upon completion of investigations,” said Adebisi.
