Chaos as a convict attempts to escape from court premises

An Ilorin Area Court on Tuesday, June 24, experienced a dramatic scene the moment a convict, Segun Samuel, attempted to escape from the court premises.

Prosecuting attorney ASP Samuel Mayowa, who was present when the incident occurred, told NAN that the offender cleverly used a broomstick to remove the chains from his leg before making his way to the bathroom and climbing the court fence.

“He has four different criminal cases in this court. One of the cases was heard on Monday and he was sentenced to one year imprisonment. In the second criminal case, he was sentenced to six months community service and the third case was supposed to be heard today, before he pulled that stunt.

“Fortunately, the prison warder and the police officers on the court grounds jumped in and went after him,” he said.

Mayowa added that following a comprehensive search and with community assistance, the ex-offender was located in a run-down building in Ilorin’s Oke-Suna Area.

He said the ex-offender was apprehended and taken back into custody after the Correctional Service officer was contacted.
