The Chinese government has pledged to support countries affected by the dreaded Coronavirus with $2 billion dollars.
China made the disclosure in a message delivered at the annual conference of the World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday, May 18.
The Chinese President, Xi Jinping, who made the disclosure noted that a sum of two billion dollars will be released in the next two years to countries affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Xi, however, explained that the fund is not only meant to deal with health issues but also to be used for development of affected nations.
The President urged other countries to increase their funding to the WHO.
Xi said, “The WHO should lead the global response. The UN agency is facing a shortfall because the United States has suspended its financial contributions.”
The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria has in a recent statement stated that it was unfortunate that the global pandemic, Coronavirus emanated from Wuhan in China, noting that the country was just a victim of the COVID-19 which its described as a common enemy to mankind.
The country, however, urged the international community to avoid the blame game and consider pulling hands together to fight the pandemic.
Meanwhile, the Chinese government, in the statement signed by the Press Secretary for the Embassy, Sun Saixiong, had condemned the former vice president for the World Bank’s Africa Region, Oby Ezekwesili, for demanding compensation from China over the Coronavirus pandemic.
Saixiong noted that China has been open, transparent and responsible since the outbreak of the dreadful virus, adding that it was not a perpetrator or an accomplice of the pandemic.
But, China’s explanation was not accepted by Ezekwesili who insisted that China must pay Africa damages by cancelling the debts the continent owes the country.
