The Federal Government has finally fulfilled its 31-year-old promise of allocating houses to members of the 1994 Super Eagles squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Tunisia.
This was announced on Wednesday, June 25 in a statement published on the official website of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.
One of the beneficiaries, former Super Eagles striker Efan Ekoku, received an allocation letter for a house in Abuja. He was represented at the brief ceremony by his niece, Lisa Jenifer Nwagbogun.
The Director and Head of the Department of Public Building and Housing Development, Pemi Temitope, presented the letter on behalf of the Minister of Housing and Urban Development. Temitope described the gesture as part of the government’s commitment to honouring those who brought glory to the nation.
“This move is a testament to the government’s dedication to recognizing and rewarding the patriotic service of the 1994 Super Eagles,” Temitope said.
Speaking on behalf of her uncle, Nwagbogun expressed gratitude to the government and the ministry for finally delivering on the long-standing promise.
It will be recalled that former President Muhammadu Buhari approved the implementation of the housing pledge in 2022, nearly three decades after it was initially made.
Houses are being allocated to members of the historic squad across various states, with some, like Ekoku, receiving theirs in Abuja.
