Former presidential aide and social commentator Reno Omokri, has claimed that the popular Igbo cap, Okpu-Agwu, is not of Nigerian origin.
Speaking on a well-known podcast, Omokri stated that Okpu-Agu is not Igbo in origin but rather a European winter cap.
“Nothing he is wearing is of Nigerian origin. Nothing! That(pointing to his cap) is not of Nigerian origin. That is an European winter cap that the colonialist’s were using . It is the truth. It is a winter cap. It is not of Igbo origin.”
Additionally, Reno claimed that the male anchor’s white top, known locally as Etibo, was not Nigerian.
‘’It is a sailors uniform. The reason why it is called Etibo is because it was sold for 8 bows which is an old currency. They could not pronounce bows and so they called it Etibo It is not of Nigerian origin.
“And all these wrappers they call George. The reason why they call them George is because during the coronation of King George, the colonial government gave the Nigerian women George and that is when they started to wear it. It comes from Holland and then the cheaper one comes from India. They just make you think it is Nigerian. It is not made in Nigeria.”
