Instagram to start hiding “like” counts on users’ posts from next week

Instagram will, from next, start hiding ‘like’ counts from certain users of the app in the United States.

The CEO of Instagram, Adam Mosseri made the announcement at the WIRED25 conference in San Francisco on Friday, November 9, 2019.

“We will make decisions that hurt the business if they help people’s well-being and health,” Mosseri said on stage at the event, Wired’s Adrienne So reported.

According to So, Instagram will hide like counts only for certain users in the US. It’s part of a test that the company has already begun in some other countries as it responds to critics and tries to create a “less pressured environment ” on the platform.

The test which first started in Canada has also been done in  Ireland, Italy, Japan, Brazil, Australia, and New Zealand. Facebook is also running a test of hiding like counts in Australia.
