“It is too early to talk about that” Jonathan speaks on 2023 presidential ambition

Former president Goodluck Jonathan has told those asking if he has 2023 presidential interest, that it is too early to talk about 2023 election.

Jonathan made this known while speaking to the press on Friday, December 4, an event organised by the Commonwealth Community Choir in Abuja.

Jonathan said there are still other issues to focus on ahead of the next general election. When asked if he would be joining the presidential race in 2023, he said: “It is too early to talk about that.”

There are speculations that supporters of President Muhammadu Buhari are considering backing Jonathan to return to Aso Rock in 2023.

According to reports, the thinking of the loyalists was that Jonathan’s presidency would satisfy the increasing clamour for power shift to the South. They reportedly believe that Jonathan will be the best man for the position if power were to shift to the south.

The possibility of the Jonathan 2023 presidency resurfaced also when some APC governors, led by Mai Mala Buni, governor of Yobe state and caretaker chairman of the ruling party, Mai Mala Buni with other party stalwarts visited him on Friday, November 20.

Though the visit coincided with the 63rd birthday of the former president, there were speculations that it had to do with the political permutations ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

Meanwhile, the APC governors’ visit provoked a reaction from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who then issued a statement claiming that the visit amounted to an apology by the ruling party for allegedly peddling lies in its desperate move to grab power in 2015.

Reacting to the PDP, the APC through its deputy national publicity secretary, Yekini Nabena, said the opposition is weak and lacked the moral ground to speak of power.

Nabena in a taunt also told the PDP that former president Jonathan is a progressive elder statesman working for the administration of the President Buhari.
