Police seeks 21 days detention for Seun Kuti as he faces arraignment

The Police have charged Seun Kuti before a Magistrate’s court in Yaba, Lagos State.

The son of late Fela Kuti and popular Afrobeat musician was arraigned for assaulting a police officer. The offense is said to contravene Section 356 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act.

The police prosecutor, S. A. Adebese, asked the Magistrate, Adeola Olatunbosun, to remand the defendant for 21 days pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

However, the defense counsel led by Femi Falana (SAN) begged the court to not remand his client. According to the Falana, he was not aware of the remand application.

Kuti had surrendered himself to the Police at the state command in Ikeja on Monday, 15th May, following an order for his arrest. The Police IG, Usman Baba, had ordered for Seun’s arrest for assaulting a policeman in a viral video on Saturday, 13th May. After turning himself in, he was later transferred to the state CID in Panti, Lagos.
