Popular Twitter Doctor, Olufunmilayo exonerated of rape by UK Medical Service

The United Kingdom’s Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service has cleared Olufunmilayo Ogunsanya, a popular Nigerian Twitter doctor, of the rape accusation made by his ex-girlfriend, Bolanle Aseyan.

In October 2020, Bolanle took to Twitter and accused Olufunmilayo of sexually abusing her, sharing her ordeal under the handle @bola_aseyan. She claimed to have evidence of the abuse and stated that she refrained from reporting it earlier to avoid jeopardizing his medical license. See screenshot of her tweets below.

Olufunmilayo vehemently denied the allegations, and the case was brought before the UK Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service, where it underwent a three-year trial. Today, Olufunmilayo has been declared innocent as the tribunal ruled that Bolanle’s claims were ‘determined but found not proven.’ Consequently, they found no impediment in his fitness to practice as a doctor in the UK.

Inibehe Effiong, a human rights lawyer representing Olufunmilayo in Nigeria, confirmed this news through his Twitter handle this morning. He shared screenshots of the tribunal’s judgment, which further revealed that Olufunmilayo had also been investigated by the UK’s Metropolitan Police on rape allegations. However, he was cleared of these charges as investigations did not substantiate the claims.

Inibehe accused Bolanle of acting out of bitterness due to the end of her relationship with Olufunmilayo. According to him, Bolanle filed the complaint with the General Medical Council (GMC) in 2020, with the intent to have him stripped of his medical license. However, the Tribunal ruled in favor of Olufunmilayo today.
