Update on murder case of ex-Imo NBA chairman, Nwankwo, lawyers queried

Investigation into the gruesome murder of former chairman of Imo Branch of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Ndionyenma Nwankwo has commenced in earnest.

Nwankwo, a senior lawyer with 36 years post call experience, was butchered in his chamber located at Number 43 School Road, Owerri, on Saturday, with a machete.

The spokesperson of the state police command, Orlando Ikeokwu, said that the command had commenced investigation into the killing of the lawyer.

It was learnt that in trying to apprehend the killers of the lawyer, the detectives of the State Criminal and Investigation Department of the command had invited the younger lawyers and the secretary in Nwankwo’s chamber for questioning.

Quoting a close source, The Nation reports that while the lawyers had honoured the police invitation and made statements, the secretary had yet to honour the police invitation.

The source said that the secretary said that her inability to honour the police invitation was because she had no money for transportation.

It was also gathered that the police had detained the man who recommended the driver to the slain lawyer.

The source said, “Just coming back from the state CID now where the matter is being investigated. The driver is at large. He is being suspected as the person who eloped with N.H. Nwankwo’s car and phone. Driver’s phone is switched off but the young man who recommended him to Nwankwo is with the police.

“Nwankwo’s secretary is being reluctant to come to the police for statement. Her reason is that she has no money for transport.

“Meanwhile, every lawyer in Nwankwo’s office has made statement to the police. They all stated how not being contented the driver had been, and how a couple of days before the killing of Nwankwo, he brought the machete in the office, now being suspected to be the object by which he was butchered.”
