Wike expresses disapproval of Naira redesign

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has expressed his thoughts concerning effects following the redesign of some Naira notes and its availability ahead of a deadline given by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

On Friday, February 3, while giving an address at the PDP campaign rally in Okrika L.G.A., Rivers State, Wike dismissed the so-called benefits of the Naira redesign, deriding the policy and the intentions portrayed.

Wike said the Naira redesign won’t wrestle corruption as it is intended to make a target of certain politicians.

The Rivers State governor and leader of the G-5 governors said:

“Mr President, I know the pressure. But please, since two of us are going at the same time, this policy has nothing to [do with trying to] fight corruption at all. It has nothing to [do with trying to] fighting politicians at all.

“The policy aims to suffer the people who elected us to govern over them [sic]. Our business is not to make the people suffer. We all know how to fight corruption; we all know how to fight politicians. This particular one does not come in at all.”
