House of Reps summon Naira Marley over Mohbad’s royalties

The House of Representatives has issued a summons to the controversial artist, Azeez Fashola, widely known as Naira Marley, with the aim of addressing the musical rights of the late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

The House Committee on Justice, Youth, and Legislative Compliance has also extended an invitation to Mohbad’s manager, Jiggy Adeoye, scheduling their appearances for October 31.

This resolution came about following the presentation of a motion by Babajimi Benson, the representative of Ikorodu Federal Constituency, Lagos State, on Thursday, October 26. Benson called for a comprehensive review of the pertinent laws governing the entertainment industry and copyright regulations, expressing concerns about the contractual agreements that artists are often compelled to enter into.

In an official letter dated October 26 and signed by the committee’s clerk, Yusuf Ibrahim, the House emphasized the need for the presence of both Naira Marley and Mohbad’s manager to provide guidance and insight, which would contribute to further legislative actions.

The late Mohbad, whose birth name was Ilerioluwa Olademeji Aloba, passed away under controversial circumstances on Tuesday, September 12, 2023. Prior to his untimely demise, he had severed ties with Marlian Music in 2022, following internal disputes and allegations of misconduct.
